Screencasts (a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration) – could be used as part of presentations during webinars, for distance training with CMS, and as separate short training modules that can be downloaded from a web-site or distributed on CDs.

Jing is a free screencapture/screencasting tool from TechSmith, the company that also produces SnagIt and Camtasia. The free version of Jing produces .swf (Flash) videos up to five minutes in length. Jing videos can be saved to your own computer, sent directly to an ftp server, hosted at, embedded in a blog or web page, or shared with Flickr or YouTube.
Price For $14.95 a year, Jing Pro removes Jing branding from your videos, allows for simultaneous recording from a webcam, and uses a different format (MPEG-4) to maximize quality and minimize file size. The free version displays Jing branding.

Camtasia Studio for Windows

With Camtasia Studio’s flexible recording options, you can choose to capture full screen, window or region. Add in music tracks, microphone, your computer's audio, plus picture-inpicture with your video camera. The toolbar inside of PowerPoint makes it one-click-easy to record your presentations, either live or from your desk. SmartFocus technology keeps track of where the action happens during your recording. Then it produces a video that zooms in on the parts you need to show. Add a graphic over your video to direct the attention of your viewers. You can even link to an external webpage or jump to a part of the video. Ask your audience what they got out of your video. Easily add Flash quizzes to any point in the screencast.
Price – one license $250 for NGO and government.

Quandary is a free application for creating Web-based Action Mazes. An Action Maze is a kind of interactive case-study; the user is presented with a situation, and a number of choices as to a course of action to deal with it. On choosing one of the options, the resulting situation is then presented, again with a set of options. Working through this branching tree is like negotiating a maze, hence the name "Action Maze".

Course Management Systems

Online courses usually have a website that uses a course management system (CMS) that students visit to access class information. These can be publicly accessible or limited to registered participants, involve instructor-student interaction or serve as a self-guided student resource, and have both synchronous and asynchronous components to them.
